The only way you still haven’t heard of green smoothies is if you live on the planet other than Earth. To be fair, they don’t always turn out bright and green but as long as it has some leafy greens in it, it counts.
Green smoothie is a great way to get your vitamins and daily serving of greens, fruit and veggies. It is delicious and oh so good for you. Blended greens and fruit are easily digested, and will satisfy your hunger because of the high fiber content. Feel free to experiment, there are millions of ways to make it, but the basic scheme is the following:
– bunch of fresh greens (ex. spinach/parsley/arugula/mint/spring mix/kale)
– berries/apple/lime or lemon juice/kiwi and other kinds of sour fruit
– banana/mango/avocado
– 1-1,5 cups of water
As long as you keep the ratio of greens to fruit at 40/60% it should taste good.
As a next step you can also add some veggies, I usually use celery, cucumber or carrots.
We used to drink green smoothies every single day for a very long time, then we switched to juicing (will make a separate post about that) and recently I made a smoothie again and oh, I forgot how delicious they are. I though I’d share couple of our all time favorite combos.
Arugula avocado smoothie
-0,5 cup arugula
-1 cup spinach
– 0,5-1 ripe avocado
– 1 banana
– 1 orange
– juice of 1/2 lime or lemon
– mint leaves
-1-1,5 cups water
Berry Celery Smoothie
– 1 cup spinach
– 0,5 cup arugula
– 1 banana
– 3 celery stalks
– 1 cup frozen strawberries/mixed berries
– juice of 1/2 lime or lemon
– mint leaves
-1-1,5 cups water
To make sure your smoothie is smooth put the greens in first and then top with fruit, when you pour the water in, it will start blending from the bottom (greens+water), this way you won’t get any chunks.
I love adding arugula to my smoothies, it gives it really nice savory hint. Also lime juice and mint instantly add a refreshing note to any smoothie.
Blend and enjoy!
