1. Fitbit. First thing on my list of February favorites is Fitbit. I got a Fitbit for a Valentine’s Day and I am super excited to have it. It’s interesting to see how simple habit of walking home from work makes a big difference in contributing to the daily goal. Turns out that 10,000 steps on a regular work day is a very easy task for me if just take that trip to work and back. I like this particular activity tracker because it tracks sleep automatically. I generally like all things measurable and I like to see trends and statistics. It was fun to find out that it only takes me 1-2 min to fall asleep. The Fitbit app is really easy to use and has a lot of fun stuff like challenges, food tracker and other things.

1. Yogurt Maker. One my favorite things this month was a yogurt maker. Last time I visited my family, my mom was always making homemade yogurt and it really was so much more fresh and delicious than a store-bought. Following her lead, I decided to get one for us as well since my baby liked the yogurt a lot and it seems to be healthier than regular milk.

After a month of using the yogurt maker I can say that it’s become a whole family favorite and every 3-4 days I make a new batch. Prep time takes no more than 7 minutes. After mixing the milk with the yogurt starter, I pour in the jars that come with the yogurt maker, set the time for 8-12 hours depending on the milk (I usually make it overnight). Couple more hours in the fridge, it’s ready!

I’ve been telling everyone about the yogurt maker so my work friend also got one and now we always talk about what we are going to try next, what are the best toppings, etc. So far I’ve only made plain whole milk yogurt but next on my agenda is flavored yogurt and some non-dairy yogurt.

Recently I was invited to attend a fun event at Todd Reed’s on Abbot Kinney with Crateful Catering.  I have mentioned Crateful before in this post. From the uniform to the serving trays to, of course, the food, everything was beautiful.  The team was professional and friendly and they worked together efficiently. I was very curious to see the behind the scenes and it was a true pleasure to watch the Crateful Catering team, led by the Michelin Star Chef Cristina Bowerman, do their magic.

Cristina, who is native to Italy, was kind enough to meet me the next day and answer a few questions I had about the real chef life.

Spinach crepes? You heard it right! Not only is it a great opportunity to have fun in the kitchen but it’s also an easy way to add some healthy greens into your meal. The concept is pretty simple: take spinach, add it to your favorite crepes/pancakes recipe, voila! End of this post. Just kidding:)

I will share the full recipe that I used to make those below. First off, spinach is a perfect green for this because it has very mild flavor on its own which totally disappears when mixed with other things in the recipe and you get to enjoy your favorite sweet breakfast with some extra benefits. Spinach is low in fat and even lower in cholesterol, it’s high in niacin and zinc, as well as protein, fiber, vitamins A, C, E and K, thiamin, vitamin B6, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and manganese, the bottom line – it’s great for you.

I love good healthy food. If I could have a giant fresh salad or a homemade soup or hearty bowl of veggies and grains for lunch every day I’d be the happiest person on Earth. Unfortunately, there are just no good lunch places in walking distance from my office and, for car-less me, lunch time is always a struggle. The other day, I came across this local company called Crateful, which provides chef-prepared gourmet meals with locally sourced and organic ingredients delivered to your door. Whatever comes with an intro like this already has my attention. And it only gets better!

Crateful is a healthy food subscription plan that offers meals designed by Michelin Star Chef Cristina Bowerman and supervised by licensed nutritionist Alyse Levine. The set up is pretty simple yet there are plenty of choices. First, you select your meal plan from 4 available options: Chef, Vegetarian, Pescatarian and Fitness. Then you choose the meal pairings such as breakfast and lunch, breakfast and dinner, lunch and dinner, dinner only or all day and how many times per week you would like to receive your meals (5 days or 7 days). Meals are prepared daily and delivered 6 days per week in the evening so you always wake up to fresh, delicious food. Depending on the length of your subscription, you may get a discount if you subscribe to the multiple weeks at a time.
